Questions and answers
For parents
How do I get started?
Create your family account, then add each speller from your family dashboard. Each speller gets a username and a password; print their login card. The INHSA coordinator confirms each family, and then your spellers can log in.
We share one computer. What's the safest way to start practice?
Use Practice as [name] on your dashboard. It signs you out of the parent page so your child can't open it, and your child can switch back to you only with your password.
My child forgot their password.
On your dashboard, choose Reset password next to their name. This also unlocks their login if there were too many wrong tries.
I forgot my own password.
Email spellwell@inhsa.org. The coordinator will send you a one-time link to choose a new password.
Should I tick "Keep me signed in"?
Only on a device your kids don't use. Without it, the parent page signs you out after 30 minutes without activity.
Turning off keyboard suggestions
Spelling practice works best when the keyboard doesn't fix words: turn off predictive text or autocorrect for this site (Gboard, Samsung Keyboard, iPad QuickType, ChromeOS autocorrect) and pause spelling-helper extensions such as Grammarly. If the trainer notices that a keyboard changed a word by itself, it tells your speller once and shows it in the round details on the Progress page.
What do Repeat, Hint and the review list mean?
Repeat, Repeat slower and Hint are there to help, and spellers should use them whenever they need. Behind the scenes, a word that needed help (or was missed) goes on your speller's own Review Words list. Your speller doesn't see why; you can, on the Progress page. A word leaves the list after it's spelled right without help three times in a row on at least two different days.
No sound?
Turn the volume up, flip the iPhone or iPad silent switch off, or pick another voice in the speller's Settings. Chrome on a Chromebook has the voice most families hear.
For spellers
How do I log in?
Choose Speller on the login page and type the username and password from your login card.
It says my account isn't turned on yet.
Ask a parent. The coordinator needs to confirm your family first.
Too many tries?
Wait 15 minutes, or ask a parent to reset your password.
Keyboard shortcuts while practicing
- Enter: Submit, then Next
- Alt + R: Repeat (Replay in Audio flashcards)
- Alt + S: Repeat slower
- Alt + H: Hint
Where is the hint?
Look right above the box where you type. When you press Hint, a yellow outline shows where the word will flash, then the whole word flashes there for a split second.
Still stuck?
